Is a fish a herbivore? (7 important things)

We will answer briefly the question “Is a fish a herbivore” along with some other questions such as is a fish a herbivore or an omnivore, is a fish a herbivore or a carnivore? Also all about herbivores fish and their adaptations.

Is a fish a herbivore?

Yes, a fish can be a herbivore. Fish are of two types mainly, there are carnivores fish that eat the meat of other animals, and there are herbivores fish that eat herbs, seaweeds and coral reefs etc. Herbivore fish are usually small in number while carnivores fish are large in number.

Questions like, Is a fish a herbivore or an omnivore? can arise. Fish can be herbivores or carnivores but they can’t be both. Unlike humans who can eat either green vegetables or meat of other animals. We will later discuss this in detail.

The marine ecosystem is divided into levels where every level has its own significance. The large fish are carnivores and eat small fish and other aquatic animals that include herbivore fish as well.

While the herbivore fish eat the marine plants as well as green algae found underwater. This food chain helps the marine environment to stay clean and healthy for sustaining all marine life underwater.

We will discuss our answer to the question: is a fish a herbivore? In detail

Is a fish a herbivore or a carnivore?

Carnivores are animals that eat the meat of other animals and survive on it, they can’t eat plants or green vegetables. Most of the fish underwater are carnivores which means they eat other marine animals to stay alive and survive. Predator fish such as sharks follow their prey and eat it, the second it comes under their control.

As mentioned earlier the fish are divided into two main categories:

  • Carnivores or flesh-eaters
  • Herbivores or plant eaters

Herbivores fish are smaller in number than the carnivores fish found in the marine ecosystem. These fish feed on aquatic plant life and algae as well, fish can also eat fruits and that’s an interesting fact. Their digestive system is built in a way that they can eat any kind of plant algae or fruits.

Digestive system anatomy of herbivore and carnivore fish

So it can be established that fish are of two main types, herbivores and carnivores. Also, there are some fish that can eat both plants and animals and are called omnivores.

The answer to the question Is a fish a herbivore or a carnivore should have been cleared by now.

Let us see now, Is a fish a herbivore or an omnivore?

Is a fish a herbivore or an omnivore?

Fish can be herbivores or carnivores but they can’t be both. Unlike humans who can eat either green vegetables or meat of other animals.

Some fish are classified as omnivores which means that they can eat both plants and animals, but they have certain limitations to it. We are now going to discuss this in detail.

It should be kept in mind that omnivores are animals who can eat both meat and green vegetables such as humans while herbivores are animals which can only eat plants and vegetables.

There are some omnivore fish found in the whole marine ecosystem but they have limitations to this fact. So it is hard to believe that a fish can eat both and every kind of plant and animal.

If such fish, that can eat any kind of plant and animal, are discovered the whole food chain and marine ecosystem can be affected as the competition to the food will increase for both carnivores and herbivores fish.

The fact that fish can eat both plants and animals, is sufficient to answer the question, Is a fish a herbivore or an omnivore?

The digestive system of herbivores fish

Herbivores fishes are the fishes that feed on Algae plants and fruits.

Herbivores are frequent eaters because they don’t have a true stomach. They have an intestine that digests all the plant materials. They have flat teeth to break down plant material and swallow it.

They are not considered a good choice for community tanks.

Role of microbes in digestion:

Microbes play an important role in the fermentation of plant materials in the gut of fishes. The final product of fermentation is short-chain fatty acids which serve as a source of nutrition for fishes.

Several microbes are found in the gut of a coral reef fish. One of them is Epulopiscium present in the gut of Acanthurids fish.

Epulopiscium plays an important role in the fermentation of plant material. The exact mechanism is unknown. Epulopiscium is closely related to clostridium spp. That breaks down complex polysaccharides and ferment sugar.

Studies show that Epulopiscium plays the same role in Acanthurids as that of Clostridium spp.

A study was conducted evaluating the microbiota of king angelfish. It was observed that some of the microbes of king angelfish were able to grow on algae cell wall components.

Importance of herbivores fish

Herbivorous fish helps keep the algae growth in check. If there is a sudden decline in their population, algae will grow even faster to an extent which covers all the sea.

Coral reef fishes are also important in maintaining an ecosystem in marine land. A balance should be maintained in macroalgae and coral reefs. Macroalgae grow very fast and they are resistant to many environmental changes. They grow at a much faster rate than coral reefs. Coral reef fish, therefore, help in maintaining macroalgae growth by consuming them.

Nowadays, increasing coral reef fish diseases cause a significant decline in reef fish population resulting in increased growth of algae and destroying the ecosystem.

One of a kind occurs in the Caribbean sea where herbivores were killed due to a disease. The decline in herbivores population causes a significant boost in algae growth.

There are two types of coral reef fishes, one is vertebrate and other is invertebrate fishes. Vertebrate fishes include sea turtles and reef fishes. Invertebrates include crabs, limpets and urchins.

On the other hand herbivores’ fish population are also kept in check by their predators.

Names of herbivorous fish

Following are some herbivorous fishes:

  1. Acanthurus lineatus(lined surgeonfish, blue-banded surgeonfish, blue-lined surgeonfish, clown surgeonfish, pyjama tang, striped surgeonfish)
  2. Zebrasoma scopas(brown tang, two-tone tang, scopas tang, brush-tail tang)
  3. Acanthurus nigrofuscus(spot-cheeked surgeonfish)
  4. Unicorn fishes(Nasinae)
  5. Nearly 100 species of Parrotfish family

Herbivores Reef fish

There are four largest groups of Reef fish that are adapted to feed on microscopic and macroscopic algae.

Following are four groups of Reef fishes:

1-Parrotfish

They are named because of having parrots like beaks. They feed on algae found on dead corals. They have beaks and two pairs of crushing jaws, they reduce the large chunks of algae coated coral reefs and digest the algae living corals behind. Their digestive system is adapted to it. Parrotfish are colourful.

2-Damselfish

Damselfish are small fish of size five centimetres ( two inches). These fishes feed on algae and zooplankton and are aggressive towards other fishes that feed on algae. They are also known as forage fishes for large predators.

3-Surgeonfish

Surgeonfishes are the most common of coral reef fishes. They feed on shoals. This increases the defence mechanism of damselfish that are guarding the algae on coral reefs.

4-Rabbitfish

Rabbitfish are also herbivores feeding on benthic algae. They have rabbit-like mouths and have venom glands in it. Their sting is painful and it proves that they have a strong defence mechanism.

Feeding your herbivores fish

Herbivores fishes are fed dried and fresh algae. In order to feed dried algae, roll the dried algae in a paper and cut it into pieces depending on the number of fishes you have.

In order to feed him fresh algae, place a rock from your aquarium in a glass jar and place the jar in freshwater. After some time a nice layer of algae will grow on it. Palace the rock in your aquarium.

Some people feed spinach and romaine lettuce, that is not the best food for algae eaters.

Conclusion:

We answered the question “Is a fish a herbivore” along with some other questions such as is a fish a herbivore or an omnivore, is a fish a herbivore or a carnivore?

We also all discussed the herbivores fish and their adaptations. We came to know that herbivores fish are small in number and can be easily kept as a pet with the help of a variety of healthy and nutritious fish feed.
